very sorry to hear. my condolences.
I just learned this morning that Al has died. I am so sorry to hear of this heartbreaking loss for his family. I haven't seen Al in several years, but he was a wonderful man--filled with luminosity, humor, and honest & deep emotions. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.
Lisa and I are devastated to hear the news about Al who was a beloved friend and fellow traveller in the wonder of ideas and in life. He had endless curiosity and a sweetness in his countenance that I shall treasure always. He challenged us to us our senses fully and brought out the art in perception. He had astonishing enthusiasms and endless energy, especially regarding educating the young and dispelling hokum and unscientific thought. He delighted in exploring and taking others on these explorations with him. Words are not sufficient to capture my fondness for him and my sadness for the rest of us on our collective loss.
Sincere condolences to Isabel and Al's family and dear ones at this time of great loss. He shall dearly be missed.
Susanna and I send our deepest condolences. A total shock. He was one of a kind.
I am so sorry for your loss. Hugs to you, Liz and all who you hold dear.
This is far too soon for Al to have a memorial page. I'm expecting him to call me tomorrow with a new plan to save the world or at least teach it to stop fooling itself.
Sorry to see you go, old friend. You were devoted to knowledge, to science, to reality and to truth, so today there is less truth in the world.
The Samuelson family will miss Al very much. The most wonderful host, the most provocative thinker, the sharpest mind at the table. Condolences to Isabel, Elizabeth and all who join in missing him. That was a life lived large. -Peter. Samuelsonfilm@gmail.com
Al and I attended high school together and reconnected on FB. As our friends from our early days often seen immortal, I am shocked to hear of Al's passing. While Al always had an interesting story to share, most of his expressions to me were about his love for isabele and the life they had created, and his great pride and love of Liz. You were as unique as they come Al. You will be missed. RIP.
I am horribly sorry to hear about Al's passing. I will miss him. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to meet him and to enjoy his company. Rest in Peace. Condolences to Isabel, Liz and all of Al's family.
I was so sorry to hear about the tragic death of Al
My deep condolences to his family and to dear Isabel
In his books and in his life, Al left a mark that will be carried for generations to come
With my deep condolences
Marie-Jo and me feel so sad to hear this news. Sincere condolences to Al's family.
Al was a real character! We had lots of fun and many adventures. I will only remember him with the fondest of memories.
Elizabeth, although I haven't seen you in many years my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Your father truly was one of a kind!
Condolences to all Al left behind. A tragic loss. My heart is with you, dear Isabel, and Elizabeth.
Sad and sudden news. Al's, and later, Al & Isabel Maxwell's gatherings attracted the most interesting people and fostered fascinating, thoughtful and stimulating exchanges. I am forever grateful and hope that I expressed that sufficiently during his lifetime. To Isabel and Liz Seckel, my heartfelt condolences. Know that friends around the world are with you.
Al, you brought wonder and adventure to our family. You will be missed, as will your riddles, puzzles, and illusions. With love,
Very sorry to hear this - Al's illusions were such a wonderful reminder of the magic of reality. His lectures at Singularity University were highly rated and he'll be sorely missed.
Al sent me his book The Great Book of Optical Illusions through our mutual friend Lennart Green. Still one of the highlights in my collection. We finally got to talk years later on the phone, just to find out he use to live right across the street from my home in La Canada. (He had moved a few years before I moved in). Small world. I'm deeply saddened to hear of his passing and my heart and prayers go out to his family. His kindness and sense of humor will be greatly missed!
Al, my wild and crazy and brilliant friend, who introduced me to Feynman and many other luminaries, who shared a love of atheism, skepticism and science and comedy. Who clued me into the little-known Thomas Paine museum in New Rochelle, and brought me to meet his artistic and musical parents. He struggled to get our Darwin's Fish free of restrictions, so everyone could use it (we naïvely didn't copyright it so it would be free to all--a big mistake). Al's death is huge loss for all of us who were lucky enough to know him. Condolences to Al's family who must be devastated. Rest in peace old friend, you will not be forgotten.
All was a kind, curious and engaging person, and his presence with us will be missed. Here's to his great sense of wonderment, and all the warmth he shared with others.
Very Sad to hear this news. I met Al at TED many moons ago and every year we would have fantastic discourse about any and all topics.
my heartfelt condolences to his family,
Al was certainly one of kind to say the least . He was always trying to please others, Almost to a fault . He will always be remembered as a giving soul. My thoughts go out to Laura, Elizabeth, Bernard
Al, our family holidays will not be the same without you. I'll miss hearing your chuckles as various family members work to decipher the newest puzzles. You added so much laughter, delight and of course, new ways of viewing the world to our corner of the world. Thank you.
Deepest condolences from the Husseins, in Boston and in Israel. We are all saddened by the news of Al's passing. He was a dear friend, a sharp thinker, and the most gracious host, always! Al had a great sense of social justice and we will miss the thought provoking Israel-Palestine related political discussions we shared over many hikes and meals. The world has lost a great mind and a wonderful human being. My heart goes out to you Isabel and Elizabeth. May his soul rest in peace.
So sorry to hear. I didn't know Al close enough to say he was a close personal friend of mine, but we worked together on an illusion project two decades ago, he came to Canada but we couldn't find him Northern Lights. We had just reconnected to yak about his early days in the secular movement, and now it's too late. Indeed a character, so sorry I'll never hear the stories firsthand.
It is not important what kind of stories I might have shared with Al, I just want to say I am sorry and my heartfelt condolences go to Isabel and Elizabeth. Al was a wonderful man and his dedication went out to you and the broader world of knowlegde. I feel priviledge to have been the tiniest part of his life.
Dearest Elizabeth, Bernard and Isabel:
Hugs! My heart goes out to you. Al was and will always be an inspiration. He was always striving to be Positive and Productive. We shared stories of our mutual family friend Richard Feinstein.
I gave a copy of his book "Illusions" to Jim Carey who marveled in each page.
We especially enjoyed our Malibu family hikes.
Al was a wonderful influence in my life.
Love and Respect,
Yes our hearts are heavy with news of Al's passing.
Many thanks for the Ghost reference how we keep his memory alive in our Hearts and Souls.
Zem and I were so saddened by the news. We are so fortunate to have known Al and the world was always better with him in it. Our thoughts go out to Isabel and all of Al's family and friends.
Dear Isabel. I am saddened to hear of Al's passing. I'll never forget my amazing visit to France and being so welcomed into your home. It was my first time sleeping in a real castle and seeing real cave paintings. You and Al were so kind and the conversations we had were so forward thinking. It is something I will never forget and something I treasure. He gave me archeological gifts for my family that are still marveled. My sincerest condolences to you as I saw the love you both shared and to his daughter Liz who I never met but Al spoke of so fondly and with such pride. Love to you.
My deepest condolences to the family.
I was a speaker with Al at the idea city conference in toronto canada 2005 when we became friends. Al was a generous host who opened his home when I was in malibou and his daughter Elizabeth taught me how to surf that weekend.
Al was so interesting to tak with and learn from.
May you rest in peace my friend.
I am so shocked and saddened to hear of Al’s passing. We all have such wonderful memories of that special time we spent with the two of you in France. Al’s passion for adventure and life was truly remarkable. His kindness and generosity will always be remembered. My heart goes out to you and Liz.
I send my sincere condolences to Al's family and loved ones. I am grateful to Al for inviting us all to his wonderful parties, the magic party, the fourth of July party, his wedding. All of what he offered were gifts--the sceptics group, coming on camping trips, writing books on illusions, inviting my widowed mother to go on a kayaking trip around Catalina Island--she was delighted! And driving all the way out to our house for a dinner party, offering a curious and inspiring outlook on life, these were all gifts that enriched us all, and were offered freely. Thank you, Al!
